Want to look like even more of a whizz in the kitchen? These simple tricks will help you stay firmly in the ranks of the super-smart…

Stop fruit from browning

If you’ve pre-sliced a browning fruit like an apple, only to realise you need to run to the shops for another ingredient, keep it from browning either with the traditional quick dip in lemon juice, or by holding the whole fruit back together with a rubber band.

Banish smells

Don’t want to advertise that you burnt the bottom of the stew?

A pan of citrus peel and cloves in water boiling on the stove will quickly banish any bad smells, and leave a scrumptious combo in its wake instead.

Conquer the onion

While we can’t promise you won’t get an attack of the snivels when you cut them, hanging your onions up in an old stocking keeps them out the way, prevents early mould, and stops them shedding all over your cupboards.

No more splatters

Does a simple whirl with the whisk end up looking like Armageddon broken loose?

Place a paper plate over the back of your whisk and save yourself from the cookie-dough carnage forever.

Looking smart in the kitchen has never been simpler with these easy tips.
