7 African Inventors And Their Amazing Inventions

We’re not usually taught about African Inventors in school

Contrary to popular belief, a lot of Africans are actually behind the invention of things that have changed the world we live in. These people aren’t as celebrated as they should be, so we’ve decided to share their names and inventions with you.

1. CT Scanner 

Allan McLeod Cormack is the South African Physicist who first explored the possibilities of developing a radiological cross-section of a biological system. His research provided the foundation on which the CT Scanner was built. He published two papers on his invention in 1963 and 1964, and Godfrey Hounsfield developed the CT scanners and sold them commercially. Cormack shared the Nobel Prize for Medical Achievement with Hounsfield in 1979.

2. Graphite Anode

This was invented by Rachid Yazami, A Morrocan scientist. He invented Graphite Anode of Lithium ion batteries. Today, his invention is used by huge tech companies like Samsung, Nokia and Apple.

3. Cardiopad

The Cardio pad was invented by a 26 year old Cameroonian, Arthur Zang. The Cardiopad is a touch screen device used to perform heart examinations remotely. It can send results wirelessly to specialists.

4. Cancer Goggles

This was developed by Dr Achilefu, A Nigerian surgeon based in the U.S. The goggles allow doctors to see the healthy and cancerous cells in the body.

5. Speed Gun

The Speed Gun was invented by Henri Johnson, a South African engineer. The device accurately measures speed and angles of speeding objects such as cricket, golf, and tennis balls. It is used in sporting tournaments all over the world.

6. Pool Cleaner

The Pool cleaner was invented by Ferdinand Chauvier, a South African Hydraulics engineer.

7.  Tellurometer

This was invented by Trevor Lloyd Wadley, a South African Electrical Engineer. He invented a device that was made specifically to measure the earth’s ionosphere.
